Cheptegei maintained 80 per cent burn wounds after her charged boyfriend drenched her body with petrol and set her on fire. The burns harmed most of her organs.
The said boyfriend Dickson Ndiema Marangach moreover supported burn wounds amid the assault.
He was moreover conceded to the same ICU office with approximately 30 per cent burns.
On Sunday, Marangach is said to have sneaked into Cheptegei’s domestic with a five-litre jerrican full of petrol.
Cheptegei had gone to church with their children and when she returned, the man poured the petrol on her and lit fire.
Neighbors had a commotion and protected the two who were hurried to healing center in basic condition. They were afterward alluded to MTRH.
The athlete’s father Mzee Joseph Cheptegiei clarified that the two were fair companions for a few time.
He claimed they had been quarreling over her arrive at Endebes in Trans Nzoia where the assault happened.

Cheptegei in May won the 1500m race in München Pfingstmeeting, München, Germany before going on to finish 9th in the 800m race at Rehlingen Pfingstsportfest, Rehlingen 2 days later. She would also participate in the Regensburg Sparkassen-Gala, Regensburg in the 1500m race where she finished 15th.
Cheptegei also participated in the Janusz Kusociński Memorial, Warszawa 1500m race finishing 10th. Cheptegei won the Kampala 10,000 m race in Kampala, Uganda.
In 2011 She started the year off finishing 55th in the senior race final at the 39th IAAF World Cross Country Championships, Punta Umbria. Cheptegei came 2nd at the Madrid Half Marathon in Madrid. She would later finish 3rd in the Camargo Spanish 10,000 m Road Running Championships, Camargo. Rebecca then participated in the Rio de Janeiro CISM Military World Games Women’s 5000 metres.
She represented the Uganda People’s Defence Force and finished 3rd in the 1500m race. She would also finish 5th in the 1500m at the Kampala Ugandan Championships, Kampala. She would come in 2nd in the Cantalejo Half Marathon, Cantalejo before finishing off 10th at the 10 km race at the Lisboa São Silvestre da Amadora, Lisboa.
In 2024, she qualified for, and competed for Uganda at the 2024 Summer Olympics in the women’s marathon, finishing in 44th place.
